Breast Cancer

Our geno or enviroment have probably some effect on breast cancer sufferers but currently there is no defined cause for breast cancer, although with the above there are other factors which can put someone at a higher risk of becoming a breast cancer sufferer. Like many risk factors there are some which are unavoidable, while some are not.

Breast Cancer. A nightmare for some and honestly for most women it is a phrase they dread hearing, unfortunatly it is a phrase more and more women will hear in their lifetime. Of all the cancer types breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women. There is cases of breast cancer in a small number of men also. Studies have found that breast cancer seems to be most commonly associated with those that have contracted breast cancer to be in the age bracket above the age of 50. The risk of breast cancer in younger age groups is not as high as those in older age groups where the risk is also greater of contracting breast cancer.

Some Unavoidable Risk Factors;

- Our age: The older a person gets, the greater the risk factor.

- Our gender: Women are more susceptible to contracting breast cancer than men.

- Our family history: The history of our family will show us that if a family member has previously contracted breast cancer, then the chances of another member of the same family contracting the disease rises considerably.

- Our race: The white skined races of women are much more susceptible to contracting breast cancer than black or Hispanic races of women.

- Our genetic predisposition: If the body carries a gene associated with the occurance of the disease, the odds of contracting breast cancer can increase greatly for that person. Like any gene this gene can be passed down throughout the forthcoming generations. Any parent that is known to carry a genetic predisposition to breast cancer will show that it is also possible for their children to be at risk of breast cancer by the same gene as well.

- Any prolonged exposure to estrogen: Breast cancer in those women who enter the menopause cycle at a more advanced age than studies have shown as normal, (55+), are believed to have a higher risk factor. The hormone estrogen is believed to play a part in causing breast cancer to form.

Some Factors Which Can Be Controlled;

- Our weight: Those who are overweight place themselves at a higher risk of any cancers, also in breast cancer. Being overweight can be changed and would be advised. Therefore to begin an exercise program and improve their diet for those that are overweight should be done as soon as possible. More so if coupled with age factors and family history concerning breast cancer. Note: Importantly be sure to consult with a doctor or preferably their family doctor before beginning any rigorous exercise program.

- Alcohol Drinkers: It has been uncovered that those who drink more than one alcoholic beverage per day are thought to be at greater risk of breast cancer than those who do not drink. Struggling with alcohol addiction can be helped. Seek help to quit and cut the risk. Sometimes it may not be desireable or possible so if that is not possible, try to limit yourself to only one alcoholic beverage per day.

- Smokers: Once again, as with many other cancers, those who smoke are putting themselves at a higher risk for cancer. Quit smoking or get on a fast quit smoking paln as soon as possible to reduce the risk of cancer.

Symptoms Of Breast Cancer

There are several easily discoverable symptoms which may point to breast cancer. On a breast examination finding a lump or hardening of the breast, or areas near the breast, would be one of the most common symptoms. There are other symtoms which can include an unusual change in breast size, any discharge from the nipple itself, uncommon tenderness and even a change in how the breast physically feels. If you feel you are or have experienced any of these symptoms you would be well advised to visit your family doctor as soon as possible.

All those women that are over the age of 50, a mammogram is an available tool for you in breast cancer prevention. Having your family doctor schedule one for you at appropriate intervals can be very helpful. During a self examination, if you discover a lump, quickly have it checked. It is often said a little prevention can go a long way in avoiding an unnecessary battle with the advanced stages of this dreaded disease. If caught in the early stages, breast cancer is much easier to combat and in most cases can be beaten. If allowed to reach an advanced stage, the survival rates are much worse. That means screening and preventative measure are essential and should be adopted as part of our life care schedule.
